AIFA - Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Arts, 28 - 30 November 2022
The interactions between AI and art are emerging and to explore this area of research we are currently organising AIFA, a scientific and multidisciplinary conference that aims to provide a forum for researchers, engineers, artists and also students to exchange views on the state of research and development in the broad areas of AI and art. AIFA aims to cover a wide range of topics on which scientists and artists will discuss viewpoints and perspectives (economic, sociological, legal, ethical, and others) for or against AI. Leitmotif
Modern computer machines and algorithmic intelligence have made it possible that large amounts of data can be collected, retrieved, and analyzed from a variety of sources. This offers a high potential and many challenges, but raises also questions, for example, how data can efficiently be managed, processed, and retrieved, which algorithms can and should be used to extract knowledge out of it, and whether (or not) these extracted patterns are really reliable and durable. Also, the selection of the correct answer(s) to these findings, as for example a new marketing campaign, will lead to data back again, but then the data situation is quite different to the previous situation; the data life-cycle refers to a loop that continues:

Courses
In this regard, the Bachelor courses are concerned with Data Science, focusing on applications. Here, we concern aspects like Data Modeling and SQL, modern Data Management systems, and Data Quality (part I) as well as Database Transactions and Concurrency, ACID, Data Security and Privacy Data Visualization, Data Mining, and Data Warehousing (part II). The Master courses concern more scientific aspects in the information area: Information Retrieval (Boolean Model, Dictionaries, Natural Language Processing, Vector Space Model, Ranking, Evaluation, Text Classification, PageRank, etc), Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery (Preprocessing, Machine Learning algorithms, Interpretation and Evaluation), Machine Learning (Deeper insights in Machine Learning algorithmic). The learning outcome for each course is an understanding of the content. I attach importance to the 'why' rather than to the 'how', encouraging students to look for alternatives, to be curious and critical, and to understand problems from different perspectives.
