Michel Beine has been Full Professor in International Economics at the University of Luxembourg since September 2005.

He graduated in Economics at the University of Namur, Belgium (1991) and got a PhD in Economics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (1997). His PhD thesis studied the desirability of the European Monetary Union.

He has been a researcher at the Service d’Etudes et de Statistiques of the Walloon region, during which time he specialized in economic forecasting.
After his thesis, he lectured at the University of Lille II (France) until his arrival at the University of Luxembourg. Since 2000, he has also taught Monetary Theory at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
Michel Beine made scientific visits to several places, including the University of Ottawa (Canada), the University of Munich (Germany) or the World bank.

His main research interests focus on International Economics, both on its financial and real aspects. One central area of interest is the issue of the brain drain from developing countries to developed countries, and its welfare aspects. Generally speaking, his work looks at the determinants and the impact of international migration.
His work was presented in many research seminars and international conferences. Part of his work has been published in international journals such as Journal of International Money and Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, European Economic Review, Journal of Development Economics Journal of Regional Science or Economic Journal. Michel Beine is also associate editor of “International Economics” . He has worked as a consultant for various institutions such as the World Bank, Industry Canada, the Banque de France , the Economic Research Forum or the Walloon Region (Belgium).
