Research topics: Foreign language learning and teaching, language learner strategies, multilingualism and bilingual first language acquisition

Claudine Kirsch is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education at the University of Luxembourg. Appointed in January 2012, she is a member of ECCS and the institute for Research in Applied Educational Sciences (AES). She leads several research projects (e.g. iTEO, MuliPec), teaches on a range of programmes and supervises PhD and MA students.

Claudine Kirsch read Science of Education at the ISERP (Teacher Training Institution) in Luxembourg and subsequently worked for nine years as a primary teacher in Luxembourg. She took both her Master and her PhD in Education at Goldsmiths, University of London, where she taught on the BA, Primary PGCE, MA and PhD programmes for 9 years before taking up her current post. She set up and coordinated a number of courses including the primary Modern Foreign Languages programme and, within this course, the bilateral exchange programmes between England, France, Germany and Spain.

Claudine Kirsch’s research interests include foreign language learning and teaching, language learner strategies, multilingualism and bilingual first language acquisition. She is on the Editorial Board of the Journal "Language, Culture and Curriculum”.

  • October 2011 Changing country, changing language. This study examines how 2 English-speaking children aged 2 and 4 develop Luxembourgish after their move to Luxembourg.
  • January 2012 Researching language acquisition with the tool iteo (with Gérard Gretsch). This study investigates how children develop language skills in various languages while telling stories on the application iteo. The research takes place in a school in Luxembourg and focuses on 4 year-olds with an ethnic minority background who learn Luxembourgish, 6 year-old native Luxembourgish children who learn German, and 7 year-old residents who learn French.
  • 2009-2011: Creativity in the community languages classroom: pedagogies and professional development (Nuffield project). Principal investigator (PR): Dr Jim Anderson

  • 2009-2010: Childhood bilingualism: Luxembourgish parents raising their children bilingually in England.

  • 2004-2007: New developments in teacher education and the benefits and challenges of the PGCE students’ month-long school experience in a foreign country.
  • 2001-2006: English children’s practices of learning foreign languages at home and at school and the development of their language learning strategies (PhD)
  • 2001-2003: Luxembourgish children using and learning foreign languages at home and at school
  • In her early research career she participated in national and international research projects on the development of children’s linguistic competences (e.g. DECOLAP, DECOPRIM) and the development of expertise in a collaborative open technologically enriched educational context (DECOTEC).
