Anupam Sengupta joined the University of Luxembourg in May 2018 as an , kicking off experimental biophysics research activities within the Physics and Materials Science Research Unit (). Anupam is supported with the prestigious for his proposal “”. ATTRACT Fellow FNR ATTRACT Starting Investigator Grant MBRACE – Microbial Biophysics of Rapid Adaptation in Changing Environments PHYMS
Out of ten proposals received in the framework of the ATTRACT call 2016/17, the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) selected Anupam Sengupta as Starting Investigator, allocating a total budget of 1.5 million euros to his project MBRACE (). see FNR article published in 2017
Anupam heads the , interfacing research activities between the Physics and Materials Science Research Unit (), the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine () and the Luxembourg Institute of Health (). Using a cross-disciplinary approach, Anupam’s team studies biological processes and systems under changing environments, with a particular focus on the role of geometry, order and topology in living matter. Anupam holds a Dual Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (), India. He received PhD in Physics for his work on Liquid Crystal Microfluidics, carried out at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self Organization Göttingen (), Germany (2009-2012). After a brief postdoc stay in Göttingen, Anupam moved to , USA as a Human Frontiers Cross-Disciplinary Fellow to work on biophysical processes in marine environments. Since fall 2015, he was based at the Institute of Environmental Engineering, , Switzerland. In addition to microbial ecology (on Earth), Anupam studies the behaviour of microorganisms in zero and hyper gravity conditions (using parabolic flights). He is an enthusiastic educator, and regularly organises scientific workshops and outreach activities at the interface of physics, biology and engineering. IIT Bombay MPG MIT ETH Zurich
