Frederic Garcia, PhD candidate at SnT, has won the best student paper award at the IEEE 7th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA 2011) in Dubrovnik (Croatia).

The title of the paper which he published together with Dr. Djamila Aouada, SnT, Dr. Bruno Mirbach, IEE S.A. and SnT director Prof. Bjorn Ottersten:  “A New 1-D Colour Model and its Application to Image Filtering”. The paper introduces a new 1-D model to encode coloured images for an efficient subsequent processing. This representation is equivalent to, but more compact than the 3-D HCL conical representation. It consists in gathering all the hue, chroma and luminance information in one component, namely, the cumulative spiral angle, where the spirals in question are defined as a sampling of the solid HCL cone. The scientists used their proposed model for joint bilateral upsampling of low-resolution depth maps. The results showed that, in addition to preserving the perceptual properties of the HCL colour representation, using the proposed model leads to a solution more accurate than models using grayscale images.

This research is conducted in a research program with SnT partner IEE S.A. that develops sensor systems for safety and surveillance. These research results will be used in future 2-D/3-D hybrid cameras.
