Ralf-Philipp Weinmann has received a Best Paper Award at WOOT 2012 (Workshop on Offensive Technologies, co-located USENIX Security) for his paper “Baseband Attacks: Remote Exploitation of Memory Corruptions in Cellular Protocol Stacks”.

The paper explores the attack surface created by cellular communication software in mobile phones and gives examples of vulnerabilities in widely deployed GSM software stacks. These vulnerabilities are remotely exploitable by attackers with only a moderate amount of resources.
