Reilly Smethurst was born in Australia. He previously worked as a lecturer and a musician. His early research publications are dedicated to music-mathematical theory and post-war European philosophy. Griffith University (Australia) nominated Reilly’s Music PhD for the 2018 Chancellor’s Medal; Auckland University (New Zealand) awarded him a Master degree with First Class Honours in 2012; and at the end of his Bachelor period, the Queensland Conservatorium awarded him the Music Technology Medal. 

Reilly joined the SnT’s FINATRAX Research Group in 2020, in pursuit of new and different research opportunities. He now writes about emerging standards for digital tokens and credentials. Reilly’s research topics include: tokenised sponsorship, patronage and ownership claims for digital media as well as physical artworks and collectibles; the governance of non-custodial financial services (nicknamed “DeFi”) that are based on Ethereum’s distributed ledger technology; and the World Wide Web Consortium’s verifiable credentials. 

Together with colleagues from FINATRAX, Reilly conducted an international interview study for Luxembourg’s Ministry for Digitalisation about the prospective use of verifiable credentials for public services. The interview study involved over 40 people that work with physical and/or digital credentials, such as academic diplomas, staff ID cards, and driver licences. Reilly is also involved with the University of Luxembourg’s digital diplomas trial, conducted under the banner of EBSILUX.

Reilly is advised by Professor Dr Gilbert Fridgen.
