Allocating Criteria for University Housing

Our housing park is currently full!

Room allocations are effectuated according to the following order of priority.

Please note that University student housing is available only on a temporary basis:

Students:           max. 36 months in total during their entire study period at the UL

Non-students:  max. 24 months in total

We would like to underline that we cannot guarantee housing for all our students.

The number of requests for accommodation, especially at the beginning the winter term (September) and the summer term (February), is very high and far exceeds our capacity.

Furthermore, due to our very restricted number of student homes in Luxembourg-City, those accommodations are overbooked all the time, so that the chances to get allotted a room in the capitol are very small.

Since we cannot guarantee housing for all students, we strongly advise that every applicant seeks for other options than University housing in parallel.

Criteria (Priority)

Detail

1. Incoming students

    Return from mobility students

Students registered at the University of Luxembourg as exchange students (incoming) for at least one semester within the framework of an exchange program.

Students returning from their exchange semester, who had occupied a University accommodation right before their mobility semester and having not exceeded the maximum of 36 months of student housing already.

2. Newly enrolled Non-EU  BA/MA/PhD students

Cheapest accommodations are to be made available to students (BA/MA, self-funded PhDs) with a lower budget.

PhD students with an employment and a salary, can only be allotted rooms with a monthly rent of 600 € or more.

3. Newly enrolled EU BA/MA/PhD students

EU-citizens, citizens of the European Economic Space and Swiss citizens.

Cheapest accommodations are to be made available to students (BA/MA, self-funded PhDs) with a lower budget.

PhD students with an employment and a salary, can only be allotted rooms with a monthly rent of 600 € or more.

EU-citizens are not obligated to live in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg and may consider renting affordable accommodation in areas close to the border (FR, DE, BE).

4. Students residing in Luxembourg or in the Greater Region

These students are eligible for University housing but are not prioritized as they are not obligated to live in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg and may consider renting affordable accommodation in areas close to the border (FR, DE, BE).

5. Non-students

Newly arrived non-students having signed a fixed-term contract with the UL:

  • Post-doc
  • Visiting researcher
  • Technical employee
  • Visiting student
  • Trainee

may apply for University housing but are not prioritized.

Subject to accommodation availability, these requester categories can be allotted University housing for a maximum of 24 months in total.

Salaried post-docs/employees can only be assigned studios or apartments with a monthly rent of 700 € or more.

ATTENTION: due to the very large number of requests by newly enrolled students, University housing for non-students is at present unavailable through December 2021 at least.
