Applying to study at the University of Luxembourg involves several stages. Read on to find out more about how to apply.

Choose up to three study programmes
First, you need to choose a study programme you want to apply for. You can apply for up to three programmes.

Eligibility
Find out whether you are eligible for admission to the University of Luxembourg and what the conditions are.

You will also need to demonstrate proficiency in the language(s) used for your chosen study programme. The language skills required for each programme are listed on the dedicated programme web pages, based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Required documents

We would recommend that you prepare all the required documents before starting your application. The documents you need will depend on your chosen study programme and your background. Below you will find a list of documents we typically require. This list is not binding and additional documents may be required for your chosen programme. When applying, the system will indicate which documents you need to upload to be able to submit an application for your preferred study programme.

All documents need to be uploaded in PDF, JPG or PNG format. Max. size per document: 5 MB.

For non-EU students: In case of admission acceptance, you will need to request your criminal record to undergo your immigration procedure. We strongly recommend you to request the criminal record of your country of residence in advance, to accelerate the procedure with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We suggest you request this document no later than the beginning of April, even if you have not received the result of your application.

Generally required documents

for Bachelor applications

  • An identity photo
  • A copy of your identity card or passport
  • A copy of your European health insurance card (both sides); non-EU students can obtain this card by paying a fee when they arrive in Luxembourg
  • A copy of your secondary school leaving certificate (please check the eligibility criteria to find out more about criteria for your specific situation)
  • A copy of the document recognising equivalence for secondary school leaving certificates that are not from Luxembourg (see the page on Diploma recognition)
  • A translation of the diploma if it is in a language other than English, French or German
  • A copy of the detailed transcript of your secondary school leaving certificate
  • A copy of results obtained in previous semesters
  • A language certificate for all teaching languages used on the programme (Learn more about what certificates we accept)

for Master applications

  • An identity photo
  • A copy of your identity card or passport
  • A copy of your European health insurance card (both sides); non-EU students can obtain this card by paying a fee when they arrive in Luxembourg
  • A copy of your university degree certificate (please check the eligibility criteria to find out more about the criteria for your specific situation)
  • A translation of the diploma if it is in a language other than English, French or German
  • A detailed transcript of all the grades obtained for your Bachelor’s degree
  • If you obtained your degree from a country that is not a Member State of the European Union, a copy of the recognition or accreditation of your most advanced qualification (this document is requested after you have been accepted at the University)
  • A language certificate for all teaching languages used on the programme (Learn more about what certificates we accept)

in some cases we also require:

  • A letter of motivation (explaining why you are interested in the field or course you are applying for, setting out your career goals, etc.).
  • A detailed curriculum vitae
  • Full contact details of two referees
  • A letter of recommendation

Go to our platform and fill in the form. You will be able to change your details at a later stage if necessary.

If you are registering for the first time, the system will create a temporary account. You will receive an email with a request to reset your password. This will activate your account.

Complete the application by paying the fee and attaching the required documents

  • Pay the administrative application fee if requested (50€ per application*). You can pay directly via the platform by credit card.

For successful applicants who enrol in a study programme, the application fee will be deducted from their first-semester tuition fee. This fee cannot be refunded after it has been paid.

There are some programmes and cases that are exempt from the application fee

  • Upload the required documents for your chosen study programme.
  • Make any changes to your details if necessary. Prior to the deadline for applications, you can change your documents and application form as long as you have not yet submitted your application.

*The application fee is a one-time payment per programme application. It cannot be refunded if an application is rejected. However, successful applicants who enrol in a study programme will automatically have the application fee deducted from the enrolment fee for their first semester.

Once all the documents have been attached and the fee has been paid, you can submit your application.

Each programme has its own deadline,so please make sure you check the programme deadline for your application profile (EU or non-EU).

No exceptions can be made for late applications.

You will receive an automatic confirmation email that your application has been submitted.

Your application will be processed as quickly as possible. You can follow the status of your application on the platform.

What happens with my application after I submit it?

  1. The Student Department will carry out an initial check to see whether your application has been completed correctly and whether you are eligible. Depending on the status of the application, the Student Department will:
    • reject applications that do not meet the admission criteria;
    • request any missing documents from the applicant;
    • forward the application to the selection committee for your chosen study programme(s).
  2. The Student Department will transfer all eligible applications that have been correctly completed to the selection committee for the relevant study programme.
  3. The Student Department will inform you of its decision. Depending on the decision of the selection committee, the Student Department will inform you that:
    1. you have been admitted to the University;
    2. you have been offered a conditional place at the University;
    3. your application has been placed on the waiting list;
    4. your application has been rejected.
  4. You will be asked to pay the enrolment fee.
  5. Payment of the enrolment fee confirms your registration. You are granted student status for the entire semester.
  6. You will only be able to pay the enrolment fee if all criteria and conditions have been met.
