Accreditation of prior experiential learning

The procedure for accreditation of prior experiential learning enables the recognition of academic and/or professional experience in order to :

  • access a study programme
  • obtain study exemptions (Credit Transfer / Waivers)

1. Accreditation of prior experiential learning in order to access a study programme

Accreditation of prior experiential learning may be submitted by anyone who does not meet the criteria for access to studies under section 32 of the Act, in order to access studies leading to a Bachelor or Master degree. The APEL is based on:

  • the studies
  • and/or a full-time equivalent professional experience of at least 3 years which is in the same field as the intended programme of studies

This process is only possible for citizens of the European Union, the European Economic Area or the Swiss Confederation.

Any request for validation of prior experience for access to a study programme must be indicated at the time of the online application, by selecting “I request recognition of prior studies and / or professional experience”. In this case, please complete the form and add it to your online application.

2. Accreditation of prior experiential learning in order to obtain study exemptions (Credit transfer / Waivers)

Any candidate admitted to a study programme, like any registered student (except in the last semester of studies), can submit a request for accreditation of prior experiential learning in order to justify some of the knowledge and skills required by the programme.

The accreditation enables to partially exempt a student from taking certain courses in the study programme. In any case, the student must take courses at the University corresponding to at least 60 ECTS credits from the study programme. The following experiences can be taken into account:

  • prior higher education studies pursued by the candidate
  • prior professional experience acquired within the framework of a work activity, whether it was paid work, self-employed or voluntary activity, continuous or not,  for a cumulative duration of at least three years on a full-time equivalent basis and in relation to the object of the candidate’s request

Any request for validation of prior experience in order to obtain study exemptions has to be submitted to the Study Program Administrator via the form, along with the requested supporting documents.
