Financing your PhD

As a doctoral candidate, you may receive funding directly from the University of Luxembourg or through research grants. Alternatively, you may choose to fund your own studies or pursue your degree in tandem with work.

The source of funding does not necessarily influence the content of your research, but it may impact your employment status at the University and consequently other benefits.

Direct University of Luxembourg financing

The University of Luxembourg directly funds many full-time doctoral candidates published on its job portal.

Other financing

Non-University funding is available through:

  • National research grants from the Luxembourg National Research Fund: Financing through the Luxembourgish Fonds national de la recherche (FNR) including the PRIDE competition, CORE, and other schemes;
  • International research grants: EU and other international funding schemes;
  • Third-party funding: funding through companies in public-private partnerships, or directly through a research institute.

Self-financing

If you choose to finance your own dissertation, you may still apply and enrol as a doctoral candidate. You will not receive an employment contract through the University. If you are employed elsewhere, you may choose to carry out your doctoral studies on a part-time basis.

Employment status
If you are directly employed by the University of Luxembourg, you will receive an initial 14-month fixed-term contract for 40 hours per week employment; the contract may be successively extended up to 4 years.
