Doctoral school of law
Our programme responds to the needs of PhD candidates educated in different legal systems and prepares them for competitive academic and non-academic future carriers. General skills and methods courses are combined with specific training in legal topics, including themes attached to externally funded research programmes on doctoral education. In addition to the creation of a stimulating research environment among PhD researchers through its own activities, the Doctoral School in Law favors mobility and supports participation in conferences and academic events at other academic institutions.

PhD researchers in Law can follow training sessions and courses offered by the Doctoral School and by the Central University, as well as participate in activities and courses organized by the Max Planck Institute in the framework of a cooperation agreement between the Institute and the University.
In conducting their individual research projects, the candidates are assisted not only by their supervisor but also by a thesis supervision committee that meets on a yearly basis. These yearly discussions help
- in formulating and implementing the Research and Training Plan;
- in developing critical thinking and research independence.
Since August 2020, each Doctoral Candidate must sign a Doctoral Education Agreement (DEA). The DEA describes and regulates the rights and obligations of the doctoral candidate and the (Co)supervisors.
A Research and Training Plan (RTP), in appendix to the DEA, lists the courses and training activities to be followed, the corresponding ECTS and any additional requirements for the Doctoral Candidate.
Thesis supervision committee
Principles
The remit of the thesis supervision committee is to supervise the work of the PhD student. The committee meets at least once a year with the PhD student to evaluate the progress of his/her work.
For PhD students, this provides opportunities to:
- learn to present ideas clearly and succinctly,
- evaluate progress on their thesis,
PhD Defence
The PhD student presents his/her manuscript to the thesis supervision committee (followed by questions/answers). The latter writes a report and forwards it to the University President, who either does or does not give his approval for admission to the PhD defence on the thesis no later than six weeks after receiving the report prepared by the supervision committee.
Specific information regarding PhD defence (constitution and composition of the exam panel as well as the examination method) is stipulated
in law dated 27 juin 2018, modified by law dated 9/8/2018 and the “règlement des études” date 13/9/2018 The two aforementioned documents are available here.
Duration
The doctoral student must submit his thesis no later than 4 years after his admission to the doctoral program.
The thesis defense must take place no earlier than 3 years and no later than 4 years and 4 months after admission.
