Huawei Seeds for the Future 2017

Elisa Urbain, bachelor student in Engineering, took part in the "Huawei Seeds for the Future" programme, which took place in China on August 2017. Initiated by Huawei in 2008, the programme seeks to develop local ICT talent, enhance knowledge transfer, promote a greater understanding of, and interest in, the telecommunications sector, and encourage regional building and participation in the digital community. Elisa thus comments her trip and shares this two-week experience in China with us.

How did you join the Huawei Seeds for the Future?

"I submitted my application in English with a two-minute video presenting myself and explaining my motivation to participate in the programme. I was selected after some selection rounds among candidates from different Belgian Universities and a final face-to-face interview. At the end, I was the only student from the University of Luxembourg! All the selected candidates then met at Huawei Brussels for a briefing session at the beginning of July and we took the plane to Beijing (China) on 17 August 2017. All travel costs (flight ticket, accommodation, food) were covered by Huawei."

What did you do then, once landed? What were the activities planned for this two-week experience?

"The first three days were mostly dedicated to sightseeing. We went to the Forbidden City, a palace complex in central Beijing on the first day. Then, we visited a few destinations of great historic value to China, such as the Great Wall and the Summer Palace. The week after, we started the Mandarin language & culture training at the University in Beijing.  The teachers taught us lessons about Chinese language, respectful communication in China and gave us deeper understanding of the Chinese culture. We had the opportunity to learn everything we need to “survive” in the city: the common words, numbers, closing formula, the way to negotiate with people on the marketplace, how to present ourselves and to take a taxi… We also took lessons in Chinese calligraphy and painting and we were provided further understanding of Chinese artistic tradition."

*We then moved to the University of Huawei in Shenzhen, where we learnt about Huawei as a company, its goals, current and future. Once there, we attended several courses on ICT Technologies & Solutions as well as took part in first-hand work experiences at Huawei’s Shenzhen headquarters and laboratories. During the trainings, we walked through setting up multiple telecom services. Other courses encompassed subjects such as Internet/IPTV/VOIP/Video Call Experience, mobile Internet application & development trends, typical Huawei device (modern/mobile/pad), etc. We also visited the Electronics Market, did some touristic visits of Shenzhen’s surroundings and we even went to some karaoke bars. We also had the opportunity to visit the incredible city of Hong Kong for a day."

What did you enjoy the most during your trip?

"Everything was very enriching. In addition to the trainings and courses we attended, I also enjoyed meeting other students from abroad. We learnt a lot from each other and these international connections gave me the opportunity to network and interact with Seeds for the Future program participants from around the globe (United Kingdom, Kenya…). I also met Chinese people, who were very friendly and curious to hear about our trip and us."

Would you like to say something to the students, who might be interested in the Huawei Seeds for the Future?

"Following my incredible trip to China with Huawei, I would say that this experience was the best of my life, as I enjoyed each part of it. I really encourage every student of the University of Luxembourg (and other universities, of course) to take part in this adventure. This is a unique opportunity, which also leads to a good visibility on the job market."
