For the World Cancer Day (4 February), an interdisciplinary team of scientists in Luxembourg publishes a quiz about cancer on Kahoot. The quiz contains several questions about the causes of cancer, risk factors, diagnostic tools and treatments. It is available for free and in three languages (English, French and German). The quiz aims at sharing cancer-related facts in a more informal way and hereby raising public awareness for cancer diseases.

The University of Luxembourg invites all interested persons, families and schools to take the quiz and test their knowledge: Participate in the online challenge until 4 March 2021 (English, French and German). You can also start your own challenge with your class or family (English, French and German). Future quizzes will also be published on this Kahoot account.

The scientists behind the quiz

“Recently, a few of my colleagues were diagnosed with various types of cancers”, says Rutuja Bhusari, one of the scientists involved in the development of the quiz. “I realised I didn’t know much about cancer or its treatments.” To increase her knowledge and to share it with others, the doctoral candidate from the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) participated in this outreach activity.

The team consisted of eight doctoral candidates from different fields of research (Rutuja Bhusari, Yang Zhou, Begoña Talavera Andújar, Rebecca Czolk, Yahaya Abubakar Yabo, Pelin Kaya, Polina Pavlikova, Angela Odero), as well as Nicole Paschek, Project Manager of Doctoral Education in Science Communication (DESCOM), and Elisabeth Schaffner-Reckinger, research scientist from the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine (DLSM).

A live quiz session will be held together with cancer scientists on 23 - 25 April 19:00 in several languages. More information on this will follow soon here in the News & Events section of DESCOM.

The DESCOM project and this quiz is supported by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR). DESCOM aims to support interactions between academia and the public by providing different modes of training in science communication as well as organising and supporting outreach activities.
