Fellowships for “Visiting PhD candidates”
The University offers doctoral candidates displaced by the war in Ukraine the opportunity to become a “visiting PhD candidate”, to allow them to continue their research in a chosen field, They will be hosted in one of the four doctoral schools of the University and will join a research team under the supervision of a professor. Visiting PhD candidates will not be registered as regular doctoral candidates at the University.
Prerequisites:
- Applicants must prove that they are registered as PhD candidates in a university in Ukraine (third country national PhD students coming from Ukraine must fulfil the conditions to obtain the temporary protection status in Luxembourg)
- Applicants must be under the temporary protection status delivered by Luxembourg
What the University offers:
- A six months’ fellowship as a visiting PhD candidate
- A contribution to living and accommodation expenses
- Registration to an insurance package (SIP) including civil liability and health insurance
- ECTS acquisition for participation in disciplinary and transferable skills courses, with the agreement of the Ukrainian university

Fellowship programmes for Guest researchers at the University
The University offers a number of fellowship programmes to allow researchers affiliated to a Ukrainian university and displaced by the conflict in Ukraine to continue research work in their chosen field.
Prerequisite conditions may vary depending on the field of research activity. Applicants must have a PhD diploma from a recognised Universiry and must benefit from the temporary protection status delivered by the Luxembourg Immigration Directorate
The University offers a six months’ fellowship including a contribution to living and accommodation expenses and registration to an insurance package (SIP) including civil liability and health insurance.
- Fellowship programme at the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine:
The faculty makes available research fellowships for the duration of six months for doctoral candidates, post-doctoral candidates or other researchers who have fled Ukraine and who work in the areas of Mathematics, Physics and Materials Science, Engineering, Computer Sciences, and Life Sciences and Medicine.

The faculty makes available research fellowships for Ukrainian researchers and researchers of other nationalities affected by the war and working in the fields of law, economics, management or finance and intending to pursue joint research projects in collaboration with FDEF researchers. The Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg offers fellowships to doctoral candidates, post-doctoral candidates, or other researchers who have recently fled Ukraine due to the war. The fellowships are for the duration of six months, with the opportunity to extend. All scientific fields relevant for SnT’s research groups are considered.

- Fellowship at the University’s Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB):
The LCSB offers fellowships to doctoral candidates, post-doctoral researchers or senior scientists who have recently fled Ukraine due to the war. The fellowships are for the duration of six months with the possibility of prolongation. Scientific fields at LCSB cover Neurodegenerative Diseases and as well as related work in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.

Note to applicants who are currently not beneficiaries of the Temporary Protection Status delivered by Luxembourg
If you wish to apply for one of the available Fellowship positions at the University of Luxembourg and you are currently not located in Luxembourg and/or not a beneficiary of the Temporary Protection Status delivered by Luxembourg, we recommend that you proceed as follows:
- please do not travel to Luxembourg at this stage;
- please apply online for the Temporary Protection Status in Luxembourg;
- we encourage you to also apply online for the fellowship position that you are interested in at the University of Luxembourg;
- please travel to Luxembourg only once you have received an invitation for an interview by the Immigration directorate (typically a couple of weeks after your online application). Beware that you should have to renounce to the temporary protection obtained in another Member State before applying for the temporary protection status in Luxembourg.
- The applicant has to reside in Luxembourg as the temporary protection status is not transnational.
It is important to follow these steps as the University of Luxembourg can only extend fellowships to applicants who are beneficiaries of the Temporary Protection Status delivered by Luxembourg.

Temporary support by the National Research Fund FNR
Luxembourg’s National Research Fund (FNR) makes temporary support available for researchers (including technical personnel) displaced from Ukraine as a result of the war and who can be employed for up to 6 months at Luxembourg research institutions in ongoing projects funded by the FNR, based on requests for additional funding. This measure is an add-on to ongoing approved projects in the funding schemes CORE, INTER, OPEN, ATTRACT, PEARL, BRIDGES, PRIDE, IPBG.
Prerequisites and offer:
- Displaced persons benefiting from the Temporary Protection status applied at EU level for people who have fled the war in Ukraine delivered by Luxembourg
- Maximum number of positions per FNR project: 1 full-time or 2 half-time positions
- Maximum duration of employment: 6 months FTE at the University of Luxembourg (1 full-time or 2 half-time positions) with full social security coverage, pension scheme, …
- Costs covered by FNR: Salary costs for up to 6 months, travel lump sum
