Mental Health & Wellbeing

Feeling well and taking care of our mental health helps us enjoy life and the people in it. It can lead to creativity, trying new things and taking more risks. It also helps us to cope better with difficult situations that may come along in our private and professional lives.

Prioritising our mental health can also help us combat or prevent mental health problems that are sometimes associated with physical illness.

Four important ways to improve your mental wellbeing are:

  • eat well
  • be active
  • sleep well
  • meditate / practice mindfulness

Establishing the basic building blocks of wellbeing will improve both your physical and mental health.

The mental health of academic and university support service staff is the focus of increasing concern, with evidence suggesting a rise in the number of academic staff requesting counselling and health services. Studies of academic staff have demonstrated the negative impact of supporting ill students, ongoing job insecurity and workload on mental health.

Many of us find it hard to ask for help.  It can be difficult to describe how you feel or to even find the right person to talk to.

Talking to someone in a safe space can help you:

  • work out what you are feeling
  • work through it
  • release the burden
  • form closer connections with family, friends, people you trust

The University offers a free and confidential psychological support service for all staff member. If you would like to get in touch you can contact a psychologist directly:

The following ‘How To’ guides have been developed by the SEVE Student Services team as a reference point and guide for university academic and support staff. We will continue to add resources to guide and support staff over time.
