The University of Luxembourg improved its position in the 2017 issue of the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings reaching the eleventh place worldwide. The results were announced during the THE Young Universities Summit taking place at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.

The Young University Rankings, previously known as the THE 150 Under 50 Rankings, globally evaluates universities that are less than 50 years old. In comparison to 2016, when it achieved rank 14, the University of Luxembourg climbed up three positions. Among the universities established after 2001, the University of Luxembourg ranked second behind the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and ahead of the University of Antwerp.

Improving also in “Teaching” and “Research”, the University of Luxembourg did especially well in the area “Citations”. This category indicates how often the work of researchers of a university was quoted by scholars globally, using data drawn from 23,000 academic journals. “This confirms again the good work and international reputation of our researchers and that we are well on the way to establish the University internationally as a leading research institution,” comments Prof Ludwig Neyses, vice-president for research at the University of Luxembourg. “We are very happy with the results. Founded only in 2003, we are still young, even in comparison with our peers in this ranking. So, we certainly have the potential to further improve and hopefully make it into the top 10 of young universities in the coming years.”

The Young Universities Rankings apply the same performance indicators as the overall THE World University Rankings, in which the University of Luxembourg reached the 178th place in 2016/2017. However, the methodology has been recalibrated to reflect the special characteristics of younger universities. The young universities are measured on their performance in teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income. In 2017, the rankings were extended to include 200 institutions, up from 150 in the previous years.
