Belval Observatory

Re-creating an industrial wasteland in the south of Luxembourg as an innovative university campus constitutes a unique urban planning laboratory situation. In view of the staggering investments and the urban architectural significance of the project, the university's research laboratory for geography and urban planning has created a Belval Observatory.

The Observatory sees itself as an informal platform for tracing the development of the new campus, its integration into and impact on the region. Going beyond that, the Observatory wants to function as a laboratory, collecting data, making experience from other academic parks and university towns available and launching research on this subject.

Constituting the basis for this are the debates known from economic geography about the role of knowledge as a resource of the future for countries poor in natural resources.
