Zwangssoldaten, Malgré-Nous, Zwangsrekrutéiert?  – Terms, Numbers and Statistics

Zwangssoldaten, Malgré-Nous, Zwangsrekrutéiert – three regions, three terms, one fate? After the German invasion of its western neighbours, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg in 1940, the border regions reaching from Eastern Belgium over Luxembourg to Alsace-Lorraine were seen by the Third Reich as lost German territories that needed reintegration into the Reich. One part of that reintegration policy was recruiting the local female and male youth into German labour services and armed forces.

This workshop will present the recruitments in each of these areas and focus on their historical similarities and differences. Further,  it will analyse the etymology and the legal aspect of the different terms describing the recruits. The workshop’s emphasis is on the quantitative analysis of contemporary sources. How can certain sources for example help researchers to challenge persisting narratives and statistics, in order to give a clearer view of the numbers, the recruitment processes and the war experiences within Eastern Belgium, Alsace-Lorraine and Luxembourg?

Languages: German, French and English
