At an event held on 12 December 2013, the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication (FSTC) of the University of Luxembourg launched a new series of professional development courses for new and experienced higher education teachers.

The inaugural occasion was opened by Prof. Dr Rolf Tarrach, President of the University of Luxembourg, who introduced the keynote speaker Prof. Stephanie Marshall, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) in UK.

In her presentation entitled “Inspiring teachers, inspiring students: Developing teachers for 21st century education”, Marshall shared some of the experiences of UK higher education institutions, as well as the HEA, in supporting the design of the Professional Standards Framework.

This framework, along with the HEA’s support for relevant professional development opportunities, has elevated the pursuit and recognition of excellence in teaching in the higher education sector by creating a visible network of qualified fellows. Today, twenty percent of UK-based academics hold at least the basic qualifications in teaching and learning according to the framework.

Marshall also underscored the importance of quality teaching from the student standpoint, making reference to relevant surveys in the United Kingdom. She pointed to the need to integrate students as partners in the teaching and learning process and cited current campaigns across the UK.

After her speech, Prof. Marshall answered questions from the audience regarding student engagement, retention, and the measurability of key factors in teaching and learning.
