The University of Luxembourg ranks among the 201-250 best universities in the world, according to Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings 2023. The University improved its position compared to 2022 (top 251-300), and returns to its score of 2019, 2020 and 2021.

1,799 universities were ranked in the 2023 edition, compared to 1,662 the previous year. The 2023 rankings are based on data from the academic year 2019/2020 and the financial year 2020.

The overall score reflects five key indicators: Teaching, Research, Citations, Industry Income, and International Outlook.

The Research indicator reflects a university’s reputation for research excellence among its peers, the research income and the number of publications in academic journals. On this criterion, the University of Luxembourg shows a clear improvement over the years and again this year, from 39.2 in 2022 to 39.8 in 2023. The Industry Income indicator captures knowledge-transfer activity by looking at how much research income an institution earns from industry. On this indicator too, the University of Luxembourg keeps improving over the years. This year shows an increase from 47.3 in 2022 to 51.2 in 2023.

The Teaching indicator, which examines the perceived prestige of an institution’s teaching, the number of staff per student, the ration of doctorates to bachelor’s, the number of doctorates awarded to the academic staff and the institutional income, increases from 33.0 in 2022 to 38.2 in 2023.

The International Outlook indicator, which measures the ability of a university to attract undergraduates, postgraduates and faculty from all over the world as well as its international collaborations, represents a world-class rank, with a score of 99.4 for the 2023 edition (99.5 in 2022). The Citations indicator, which measures the influence of research and looks at a university’s role in spreading new knowledge and ideas, displays a slight change in score from 65.7 in 2022 to 64.5 in 2023.
