The University of Luxembourg is relaunching its event “Wine and Dine” to welcome newly-arrived students and researchers to the country. On 7 October 2018, Luxembourgish families invite the University of Luxembourg community members for lunch, show them around ‘their’ Luxembourg and spend the day together. The fresh arrivals have the opportunity to surprise their hosts with questions on culture, customs and peculiarities of the Grand-Duchy. The University is currently looking for volunteers, eager to welcome students or researchers to their home.
The scheme helps the students to quickly get acquainted to their host country and immediately feel at home. “We believe the event is a great opportunity for Luxembourg and its citizens to show their hospitality and introduce our new guests to the country. At the same time, hosts benefit from an international experience and hopefully stimulating moments,” comments Prof. Stéphane Pallage, Rector of the University of Luxembourg.
The event “Wine and Dine” is a common initiative of the University and the cities of Esch-sur-Alzette and Luxembourg. “Welcoming newcomers from all over the world in your home, socialising and discussing promotes communication and friendship. Therefore, Wine and Dine will certainly be an interesting experience to everyone participating and we encourage people to join in this initiative,” enthuses Lydie Polfer, Mayor of Luxembourg City. “A fresh start in a new country might be socially challenging. The Wine and Dine project allows newcomers to meet locals and get to know their new environment more easily,” adds Georges Mischo, the Mayor of Esch-sur-Alzette. “I firmly believe that this initiative will not only help promote social cohesion in our city but will also make the activities happening within the City of Science more tangible for the whole population.”
