For research universities like the University of Luxembourg, doctoral candidates form the backbone of research. In a celebratory ceremony on Friday 16 December, 210 doctoral candidates proudly received their doctoral certificates -- a record number for the University. The young graduates, including about 30 Luxembourgers, represented a total of around 50 different nations.

In his welcome address, Vice-Rector for Research and incoming Rector Prof. Jens Kreisel thanked the doctoral candidates for their trust in the institution and urged them to always remain open-minded and curious. “Keep on learning, and always keep on your research passion burning. Also remember, a PhD is a quality label which shows society that it can rely on your judgement, your scientific assessment, and your expertise. Use this expertise for the benefit of society,” said Prof. Jens Kreisel.

The outgoing Rector Prof. Stéphane Pallage also congratulated the PhD graduates and encouraged them to stay in touch with the University. “Your success is remarkable; we are extremely proud to confer this diploma to you. Please make sure to connect to those alumni who were sitting here the year before and make yourself known to your peers.

The Minister for Higher Education and Research Claude Meisch also expressed his appreciation to the doctoral students, underlining the importance of young researchers for the country’s future. “Luxembourg needs talent, while valuing diversity. The doctoral students here are the best witnesses to this,” the Minister stated.
The conferral of the diplomas was complemented by short presentations of selected doctoral theses, the presentation of awards, and musical interludes by the University Choir.
