On 14 September, the President of the University of Luxembourg, Rainer Klump, welcomed new and returning students to the academic year 2015/2016, urging them to be pioneers, discover new things, meet new people and make new friends.

Prof. Klump was speaking at the opening session of the University’s Welcome Week at the newly opened Belval Campus. Just under 1,000 students and staff had made their way there for a walking breakfast, the welcome talk and to meet student associations and take tours around campus.

With many new students in the audience, the President urged them to make the most of the student experience, both academically but also with a view to meeting new people, making friends and taking advantage of all activities the University has to offer.

For many, starting their university studies will mark a new chapter in their lives, a chapter that comes with challenges, as well as opportunities. “The university experience can be hard,” Prof. Klump said, adding: “Don’t be discouraged.”

The President encouraged students to “develop a spirit of pioneers”, to discover new things, to research, analyse and apply new knowledge. To enable students to do so, the University of Luxembourg with its sites in Belval, Kirchberg and Limpertsberg, offers an “international reputation for its research quality and the way how research findings are fuelled into educational programmes on all levels,” Prof. Klump explained.

“It is our commitment to educate you to become the future leaders in research, economy and society,” he added. “It should be your ambition to make use of this time of studies to open yourself to the power of research and its potential to contribute to a better world and a better life.”

Esch-sur-Alzette Mayor Vera Spautz and Sanem Mayor Georges Engel were also on site to welcome students to the new Belval Campus.
