Imagery plays an increasingly important role in scientific research, either to illustrate the way scientific work is being conducted, or to show research results in graphic visuals and help the public engage with science, or simply to put a scientist’s face on a particular research topic.

The 2022 edition of the FNR Science Image Competition has concluded and the laureates have been announced. Fourteen images received an award, including five from researchers of the University of Luxembourg. A total of 122 images were submitted by researchers and science communicators in Luxembourg in four categories (Object of study, Scientists in action, Places and tools, Science outreach activities).

The picture displayed here is called “The bubbly oil” and was taken by Prof. Dr Anupam Sengupta from the University’s Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine. The image shows microscopic liquid crystals inside the human body.

Other laureates from the University of Luxembourg include Dr Sajad Tabibi, Philippe Ludivig, Jose Luis Sanchez-Lopez, Hriday Bavle and Muhammad Shaheer.

The images are exhibited at the Luxembourg Science Center in Differdange from 29 June until September 2022, and at the Lycée de Garçons in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg from September 2022 until the end of the year.
