On Saturday 26 February, the Esch2022 European Capital of Culture will officially kick off in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg’s second-largest city and home of the University’s main campus. This major event brings together the city of Esch and a number of neighbouring municipalities in Luxembourg and France.

The label of European Capital of Culture is awarded each year respectively to two cities or regions within the European Union. This year, the cities of Kaunas in Lithuania and of Esch-sur-Alzette in Luxembourg have been selected. (The city of Novi Sad in Serbia, selected in 2021 but postponed due to the pandemic, will also be on this year’s programme).

Under the slogan “Remix Culture” and its four sub-sections REMIX Art, REMIX Europe, REMIX Nature and REMIX Yourself, Esch2022 celebrates the diversity of cultures in Europe, to create synergies, guarantee sustainable development, and most importantly generate an active public participation.

Esch2022 takes place in a region that was once driven by a unique industrial tradition and is now turning into a future-oriented centre of knowledge, with innovative and creative technologies transcending boundaries and borders.

Art and Science set the tone of the Esch2022 projects of the University of Luxembourg

The University contributes to Esch2022 through several projects designed by university researchers, combining research, science, art, nature, history and innovation. Through these projects, the University aims to emphasise its commitment to the community with a positive impact through research and teaching. “Esch2022 offers a firework of events, and the Belval Campus is one of its vibrant stages”, said Rector Prof. Stéphane Pallage.

The University’s Esch2022 projects will be presented in detail on Thursday 3 March, from 15:30 to 16:45, at the Maison du Savoir, Belval Campus.
