The University of Luxembourg hosted a visit of EU Council President Charles Michel and Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel at the Schuman house, birthplace of Robert Schuman, founding father of the first European Coal and Steel Community and initiator of the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950 which paved the way for the creation of the European Union.
The Schuman House is today used by the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) at the University of Luxembourg as a venue for teaching and research activities on contemporary Luxembourgish and European history.
The delegation included the presence of H.E. Georges Friden, Head of Permanent Representation of Luxembourg to the EU, Stéphane Pallage, Rector of the University of Luxembourg and Andreas Fickers, Director of the C2DH (the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History).
Located in the Clausen Quarter of Luxembourg City, the Robert Schuman House was acquired by the Luxembourg government in 1985, in order to maintain and develop its historical dimension as a central part of the cultural heritage of Luxembourg, France and the European Community.
