Move to Belval: new guided tours to discover our future campus
Published on Tuesday, 08 May 2012
Things are moving ahead in Belval: The whole shell of the “Maison des Sciences Humaines” is already finished, and the foundation of the ‘Maison du Nombre’ has been layed. Michael Scheuern, Belval advisor, gives us new insight into the present situation. Belval is considered to be one of the largest and most ambitious current urban renewal projects in Europe. On the 120 hectares of grounds that once housed Luxembourg's largest steel foundry, academic research and teaching, work and leisure, industry and commerce and home life and culture are to enter into a thriving mixture. The "Cité des Sciences" (City of Science) is Belval's headway project pure and simple. The first phase of the project, budgeted at EUR 600 million and comprising about 20 new buildings on the grounds of the blast furnace plateau, will house the University of Luxembourg as well as off-university research centres and a start-up centre. In its ultimate expansion, around 7000 students and 3000 teaching staff and researchers will be at work here. Moving the entire university, currently spread out across numerous sites, is expected to start in 2014. Only the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance will stay, partially, in the capital. So far, construction of the ‘Maison du Savoir’ and the ‘Maison des Sciences Humaines’ in Belval are on schedule: The shell of the “Maison des Sciences Humaines” with its five floors have already been finished. Current work now concentrates on technical installations, such as the drawing of water, gas and electrical lines. As for the “Maison du Savoir”, the crossbar with three floors is nearly finished. This part of the building will house two large lecture halls with 240 seats each, three lecture halls with 150 seats each as well as another six lecture halls with 90 seats each, not forgetting the public Conference centre in the basement with its huge 750-seat conference room. There will be two separate entrances: on the left for the access to the tower where the rectorate and the administration will reside, and on the right for students and visitors, with quick access to the lecture and seminar rooms. The 18th floor tower is due to be finished at the end of this year, with 14 floors yet to be built. Furthermore, construction of the “Maison du Nombre” has started. The basement as well as the space for the university’s data centre (centre de calcul), which will store the servers of the IT department, should be finished by the end of June.
