For many of the University of Luxembourg‘s employees and students 2015 promises to be a very special year indeed. The University management team is marking the start of the year by moving to its new headquarters in Belval.

So it was on Monday, 12 January 2015 that the first of the University’s administrative staff moved into their offices in the tower in the “Maison du Savoir”, the University’s main building in Belval. Among these pioneers in the tower were the eight members of the Belval Office, which has been dealing with the move and all enquiries concerning the University’s new location, as well as 30 or so other University employees working in logistics and IT and closely connected with the project.

The next step will take place this spring when Prof. Romain Martin and his research team from the Luxembourg Centre for Educational Testing (LUCET) join them in the Minett region. Then around Easter time, it will be the biologists from Limpertsberg Campus who will be packing their bags. The University’s entire central administration is expected to move to Belval in the early summer, followed by the whole Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education (FLSHASE) in July and August. If everything goes to plan, all the FLSHASE courses, as well as seminars and lectures for the biologists, will start this autumn in Belval.

About 500 people attended a large staff meeting today in the “Maison du Savoir” when the University management team presented details of how the move is being scheduled and the buildings allocated to the academic and administrative staff. There were stands and workshops with experts providing practical information ranging from transport links and office equipment to suggestions for eating out and leisure activities in Belval.

Alfred Funk, the University’s Director of Administration, pointed out that “moving a university is a complex process that happens in many stages and is not something that can be achieved in a week-end”. The meeting was part of an internal initiative involving guided tours, discussion sessions, blogs and other means of giving employees all the information they need and allaying any worries.

In his address, Prof. Rainer Klump, the University’s new president referred to the move’s significance and opportunities stating that “the Belval Campus will stand as a symbol for this country’s vision for its future and it clearly signals a new phase in the University’s development”.
