The University features prominently in royal Belgian state visit

From 15 to 17 October 2019, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium will pay a state visit to Luxembourg. The University of Luxembourg features prominently in the programme of the visit.

The University of Luxembourg cultivates numerous ties to Belgium, its citizens and academic institutions. The University registers some 430 students from Belgium, the fourth largest national contingent after Luxembourg, France and Germany. Currently, it also employs 150 researchers and staff with Belgian nationality. And the University’s Rector Prof. Stéphane Pallage holds the Belgian as well as Canadian citizenship.

The University of Luxembourg maintains partnership agreements with the universities of Liège, Mons and Namur. In addition, the University is involved in some 30 ongoing scientific projects with Belgian institutions such as the Free University of Brussels, KU Leuven, Ghent University, Hasselt University and UCLouvain.

Three multilateral agreements

On the occasion of the visit, the University of Luxembourg will sign three multilateral agreements. A Memorandum of Understanding with UCLouvain and the University of Liège is designed to advance research, technology and education in the space sector. UCLouvain, the Luxembourg Institute of Health, Fonds National de la Recherche, the University of Luxembourg and Sopartec will sign a letter of interest to launch a multi-sectoral inter-university fund to foster support and optimise the transfer of world class technologies for the global benefit of society. A further letter of intent between the University of Luxembourg, l’Haute Ecole Robert Schuman in Luxembourg and the University of Liège states their joint commitment to pursue and intensify the joint organisation of teacher trainings.

A diverse programme

During the state visit, the University of Luxembourg will host a meeting of the Belgian and Luxembourg research sectors welcoming a delegation of more than 30 rectors and leaders of Belgian universities and institutions at the Belval Campus.

Queen Mathilde of Belgium and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg will attend an academic seminar focusing on medical technology and innovation and will be presented with the results of different research projects; Professor Andreas Fickers, Director of the C2DH (Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History), will present the virtual exhibition “100 Years of East Belgium,” which the research centre realises in collaboration with Belgian partners. 

The University will also participate in the space symposium “Belgium and Luxembourg, a Collaborative Journey Adressing Future Space Challenges” at Neumünster Abbey.
