'More accurate than Google', 'better than a dictionary'

(Dr Maggie Charles, University of Oxford)

The University of Luxembourg Language Centre is hosting this BALEAP Professional Issues Meeting (PIM) to bring together practitioners and researchers interested in EAP provision for doctoral students. Proposals involving languages other than English are welcome but should be clearly relevant to EAP provision.

The efficient delivery of EAP courses and support requires a knowledge of the nature of PhD study and genres as well as the characteristics and needs of this student population. We invite proposals on topics concerning PhD EAP pedagogy and genres, including but not limited to the following:

  • Written genres: pedagogy and features (e.g. thesis, research articles and reports, grant proposals, interdisciplinary writing, the writing process, intercultural rhetoric)
  • Spoken genres: pedagogy and features (e.g. conference presentations, PhD defence)
  • Pedagogy (e.g. corpus work, blended learning, writing consultations, writers' groups and retreats, multidisciplinary or multilingual classrooms, critical EAP)
  • Curriculum and materials development
  • Feedback and interactions (e.g. peer tutoring and feedback, supervisor-student)
  • Reading and listening skills

Presentations will be 20 minutes + 10 minutes for questions; workshops 30 or 60 minutes.

The proposals and talks should be in English and should include implications for teaching. Proposals should be maximum 250 words.

Please send your proposal to Katrien Deroey (the local conference organizer) at luxpim@baleap.org using the online proposal form for this event at baleap.org.

Proposal deadline : 23 March 2020
