Become a peer tutor!

The Language Centre offers training for tutors in language learning and writing in French, German and English. For this training, you get a certificate from the Language Centre and  can advise your fellow students on their language learning, presentations and writing of academic papers.

The peer tutor programme can additionally be integrated in the following study programmes:

  • Bachelor en Cultures Européennes (3 ECTS)
  • Master in Learning and Communication in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts (5 ECTS)
  • Master in Secondary Education (professional) (5 ECTS)

What you should bring to the training for tutors:

  • Very good language skills in the language/s you want to do your tutor training for (max. two languages);
  • Social commitment and the wish to support your fellow students;
  • A keen interest in language, grammar, intercultural communication and learning processes.

After successfully completing the training, you may apply for a position as peer tutor at the Language Centre (contracted as Student Assistant) and consult for 20 to 40 hours per month.


- Winter semester 2017-2018: please send the following documents by 20 September 2017 to languagecentre@uni.lu :

  • an excellent text written by yourself in the language/s (max. two languages) you want to do your tutor training for (five to ten pages),
  • and a letter of motivation.

After selecting the candidates, we will hold interviews and the selected candidates will start the training in winter semester 2017-2018.

The training

The training is conducted in three modules (theory, practice, e-Portfolio) and concludes with a final test.

Theory module

The theory module will be conducted in three workshops on the following topics:

1. Supporting language learning processes

Students become familiar with the various methods of language learning in order to support others during their language learning, such as consulting on language learning, formulating learning goals and setting a study schedule, keeping a learning journal and ePortfolio work, self-assessment, getting an overview of language learning materials.

2. Writing and presenting at university

Students become familiar with the methods of consulting for writing and presenting and learn how to support writing processes and design presentations in academic and professional settings. This includes expanding genre knowledge, writing consultations, supporting academic writing processes, setting schedules, motivation, presentation skills.

3. Intercultural competence and the didactics of multilingualism

Students become familiar with the basics of intercultural communication and learn how to use these competences in multilingual settings with international students in order to consult and support learning.

Practice module

During the practice module students actively participate in two Language Centre courses (e.g. general language course, academic writing workshop, presentations, intercultural communication, conversation course). Active participation means not only attending the course but also reflecting on and documenting their own learning process and observations in an e-portfolio. In addition, they design exercises and tasks, some of which they deliver themselves in a course after consultation with Language Centre staff, or they conduct a writing consultation under supervision.

ePortfolio module

For the entire duration of the training, an ePortfolio is available to the students to document and reflect on their own learning experience, upload their exercises and design a poster for the final presentation.

Final exam

Using the ePortfolio, students design a poster for the final presentation. After the successful completion of the modules as well as the final presentation and the final discussion, students receive their certificates as student tutors in language learning and writing.
