Xavier Bettel

Xavier Bettel was born in Luxembourg City on 3 March 1973 and since 4 December 2013 he has been Prime Minister, Minister of State, Minister for Communication and Media and also Minister for Religious Affairs in the coalition government formed from the Democratic Party (DP), the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) and the Greens (“déi gréng”).

A law graduate, Bettel was elected to Parliament for the Democratic Party for the first time when he was only 26. He was mayor of Luxembourg City from 2011 until he was appointed Prime Minister. Since January 2013, he has also been the Democratic Party chairman.

Xavier Bettel has been living with Gauthier Destenay, a Belgian architect, in a registered civil partnership since 19 March 2010. On 15 May 2015, the couple were married in Luxembourg, which makes Bettel the first leader in Europe to marry a same-sex partner while in office.
