The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) supports the development of a computer science programme at the Scienteens Lab. Thanks to this partnership, a new workshop entitled “Art and Artificial Intelligence” will be open for booking from October 2021.
After a short introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), its role in our daily lives and scientific research currently done on the topic, pupils who participate in this workshop will discover that this technology can be used to create works of art. They will first learn how to design an unplugged AI, from collecting and preparing the data to training and finally evaluating the AI. They then will use computer programming to produce different drawings. The participants will have some time to explore by themselves the possibilities offered by these new tools, allowing them to get comfortable enough to then continue practicing at home if they wish to.
Through a mix of presentations and hands-on activities, this workshop highlights the importance of data and how it can be used to train intelligent machines. It also invites the participants to reflect on different questions – Can intelligent machines perform art? Does computer science involve or even require creativity? – and let them form their own opinion on AI.
No prior knowledge of coding or computer science is needed to enjoy the workshop. It is designed for high school classes (5e or 4e) and more broadly for young people aged 12 to 19. Children of RBC employees will also have the opportunity to explore artificial intelligence with the Scienteens Lab’s team: Three workshops will be offered in November as part of the company’s activities.
